Custom Project - prior to June 2017
I was looking at the Lego Pirates Chess Set (40158) we have, and looking at the microfigs we have, thinking, "I could make a much smaller chess set." And I think I'm going to do so, but I don't have as many black or white 2x2 plates with a single pip on them as I would need (I have ordered some more). But I also have (or had - it's been dissassembled) a Lego Tic-Tac-Toe Set (40265), and it's also larger than I feel it really needs to be.
So, my own custom Tic-Tac-Toe board. I had several 'blank' microfigs in two colors, light grey and light tan. So I used dark gray and dark tan for the board. At first I had a flat board with the figures on top, but they came off very easily. I raised the board and left the figures lower, and now the figs are much steadier to stay on the board. I only had four of the light tan blank microfigs, so I used a little pirate guy to be their 'captain'. And of course, that meant the light gray needed a captain too, so they get to follow micro-Gandalf.
This could easily be a travel set, even. If I do any further work on this, I might put the playing board on a single plate, and under it put some smooth plates and only a few pips, so that it can be removed like a lid, and the microfigs placed inside for carrying around.
